Introduction to Transmission System

Transmission System

Transmission System:

  • The mechanism that transmits the power developed by the engine of automobile to the engine to the driving wheels is called the Transmission System.
  • Essential components of transmission system are modulator, torque converter, planetary gears, governor, computer, seals, output shafts, differential, hydraulic designs, axles an pressure plate.

Transmission System is composed of:

  • Clutch
  • The gear box
  • Propeller shaft
  • Universal joints
  • Rear axle
  • Wheel
  • Tyres
After studying this, you should be able to:
  • Understand the transmission system of automobiles.
  • List out the components of the transmission system.
  • Describe the various functions and types of clutches and gear boxes, and
  • Explain the advantages of clutches and gear box.

Types of Transmission system:

  1. Manual Transmission: The vehicle is driven with the assistance of gearshift and foot clutch. The other components, which are used in this process, are flywheel, pressure plate and ring gears.
  2. Automatic Transmission: The gears are changed automatically corresponding with the vehicle's speed. The basic components essential for this process are modulator, torque converter, planetary gears, governor, computer, seals and hydraulic designs.

Tips for Buying Transmission System Parts:

There are few things to keep in mind while buying any automobile transmission system parts. These are:
  • Look for fresh automobile parts
  • Look for certified suppliers
  • Look for the product specific info
  • Look into the terms and conditions of the products before buying
Every student, while studying the course automobile engineering, must have the knowledge of transmission system of an automobile. Transmission system is nothing but transmitting the power from engine to the wheels transfer clutch and gear mechanisms. Clutch is mainly used to engage or disengage the engine to the transmission or gear box. Gear box is used to varying the speeds of automobile according to the required conditions or according to the need of the persons, who are driving the automobile.
