What is Chassis:
- Chassis is the basic frame work of an automobile. It supports all the parts of an automobile attached to it. Basically it is a frame upon which the main parts of an automobile are built.
- Chassis is a French word which denotes the whole vehicle except body. It is usually made of a light metal or composite plastic which provides strength needed.
Main components of Chassis:
- Engine
- Power Plant
- Transmission (Clutch, Gear box, Differential)
- Controls (Breaking and Steering(
- Basic Structure (Frame, Suspensions, Wheels tyres)
- Auto Electric System
Functions of the Chassis frame:
- To safety carry the maximum load.
- To carryall the stationary loads attached to it and loads of passenger and cargo carried in it .
- Holding all components together while driving.
- To control the vibration caused by the running of the vehicle.
- It must absorb engine & drive line torque.
Types of Chassis frame:
- Conventional frame
- Integral frame
- Semi-integral frame
1. Conventional frame has two long side members and 5 to 6 cross members joined together with the help of rivets and bolts. The frame sections are used generally -
a. Channel Section
b. Tabular Section
c. Box Section
2. Integral frame is used now a days in most of the cars and all the assembly units are attached to the body.
3. Semi-integral frame has the advantage when the vehicle is met with accident the front frame can be taken easily to replace the damaged chassis frame.
